Athletic Greens Review – An Honest Review

Thanks for taking the time to visit my Athletic Greens review site.  I think you’ll agree that when we decide to purchase any type of product these days, it’s always important to read a review from someone who has actually used the product.

This is a review site.  Click here to visit Athletic Greens Official Website!

When I first found out about Athletic Greens about a month ago, I decided to contact the company to find out more about who they were, who the owners were, how long they’ve been around, the quality of the product, etc.  Now, I have been a fan of Timothy Ferriss ever since I read his book “The 4-Hour Workweek” and found out he endorsed this product in his most recent book “The 4-Hour Body”.  So my assumption was that this had to be a great product, right?

I emailed one of the co-founders, Chris Ashenden, and found out some astounding information regarding their company.  They have been an established business since 2009, however, they only officially launched Athletic Greens at the end of 2010.  With over $1.5 million and 10 years of research and development behind them, you can rest assure they know what they are doing and have used the best ingredients that our bodies need.

Athletic GreensAlong with Timothy Ferriss’ endorsement, the other endorsements so far have been Ryan Sutter (who won the Bachelorette), Scot Mendelson (World Record holder in Powerlifting) and Isabel De Los Rios (a world renowned certified nutritionist and exercise specialist who has helped over 25,000 people).

So after reading their website, which is packed with tons of great nutritional information, FAQ’s and testimonials, I decided to give it a shot.  The product arrived within a couple of days and I was anxious to try it out.  First thing the following morning, I opened up the container and took a sniff.  Don’t we all do this instinctively? If you’ve ever had green powdered drinks in the past, you would know that most of them don’t smell so great, right?  To my pleasant surprise, it had a scent of cocoa, just like when we were kids.

I was a bit disappointed though that there was no measuring spoon, but it wasn’t a big deal for me since I have them all over the place.  I scooped up a heaping tablespoon of the green stuff into a glass of water and stirred.  That was it.  It literally took me 30 seconds to make and consume and I was done.  Surprisingly, it was quite tasty and refreshing, with a sweet aftertaste.  A lot of green juices out there on the market leave a very bitter taste in your mouth, but I didn’t get that with this product.

Dubbed the All-In-One Superfood For Active People, Athletic Greens contains 76 natural ingredients consisting of nutrient dense raw superfood complex, including wheatgrass, natural extracts, herbs & antioxidants and digestive enzyme & super mushroom complex.  And for all you organic fans, including myself, it contains NASAA certified organic ingredients.  We all hate pesticides and they are just so toxic to us.

So How Does It Make Me Feel?

Within a week of taking it, I started noticing more energy.  People that know me well would say that I already have a lot of energy and sometimes too much of it.  However, this is a different type of energy for me.  I have more mental energy and clarity, as well as physical energy.  Plus I feel that my digestive system is better processed than before.  This is probably due to the pre-biotics and pro-biotics.

I love to play all sorts of sports and as I get older, my metabolism and physical endurance is starting to slow down.  Because of that, I need to make sure that I am consuming proper nutritional foods day in and day out.  However, I don’t always have the time in my busy schedule to make a salad or whip up a good meal with lots of greens.  So knowing that I can just take one tablespoon of Athletic Greens and get all the nutritional value my body needs for the day puts a smile on my face.

The Biggest Benefit For Me

For a number of years, I have suffered from moderate gout flare ups.  If anyone reading this doesn’t know, gout can be extremely painful and debilitating.  To give you an idea, it feels like you have a broken toe or foot.  Ouch!  I wrote an article on the importance of maintaining your pH levels and consuming alkaline foods.  Be sure to read it.

Since I’ve been taking Athletic Greens, I have not had any flare ups and not even a hint of pain in my feet, which is where it has affected me in the past.  Could it be too early to tell whether it’s the product or not?  Maybe!  But I will say that I know that this product is packed with high alkaline foods which boost your pH levels to a healthy state.  Keeping a well balanced pH system helps prevent gout.

What Are The Negatives About This Product?

Just like with all products I have reviewed in the past, they always have some negatives about them.  Some more than others.  Here’s what I have found out:

  • As I mentioned earlier, they did not include a measuring spoon with the product.  Not a big deal, but it is nice just reaching into the container and using the scoop.  Plus, once you scoop it, you just put it back in the container; you don’t have to wash it.
  • Since Athletic Greens needs to be refrigerated once opened, I noticed that, probably due to moisture in the refrigerator, the label becomes slightly wrinkled.  I have a lot of products in the fridge and most don’t do this.
  • As mentioned above, since it needs to be refrigerated, it makes it difficult to travel with it. As of this writing, I have not emailed them to find out how long it can be at room temperature before it starts to go bad.
  • Lastly, this is not a product that you just take and become healthy.  You still need to incorporate exercise as with all supplements out there.  Do you need to be active to benefit from Athletic Greens?  Absolutely not!  Anyone can benefit from this product.

How About The Positives?

  • It is super easy and quick to make and is very tasty.
  • Capsules and pills take time for the body to digest the outer layer and quite a bit of nutrient value is lost in the process.  However, having it in a powder form is much easier for the body to absorb and is absorbed into the bloodstream much quicker.
  • This is an all-in-one superfood with all the necessary vitamins, minerals, fruits and vegetables that our bodies need on a daily basis.  I don’t need to take all the other pill supplements I’ve been taking in the past.  The only other supplement that I add to this are my Omega oils.  I prefer to take Krill oil, but you can take fish oil as well.
  • NASAA certified organic ingredients.  No harmful pesticides, herbicides, GMO’s, synthetic chemicals, artificial colors or flavors, preservatives or sweeteners of any kind in this product.
  • Highly alkaline with over 8 grams of green vegetables, fruits and berries that help neutralize the acids in our body.  This has helped defeat the gout I have been suffering from for years.
  • Anyone can take this product.  Whether you are active or not, Athletic Greens is for everyone.  As I mentioned before, you should always include exercise, even if it’s a nice brisk walk in the park or beach.

Some Closing Words

I have no doubt that Athletic Greens will be a part of my daily routine for a very long time.  With all the years and money that has gone into their product research and development, I feel very confident in the quality of their product.  I have taken supplements in a pill form for years and yes, they are easy to take, but are they efficient?  No!  You are actually wasting money by the nutritional loss when you take it in a pill or capsule form.

With all the fast food and junk in our society these days, we need to stop and think before we ingest these foods.  I’m not saying completely eliminate them from your diet, but eat them in moderation.  Hey, I enjoy junk food too.  By taking a green supplement like Athletic Greens every day, exercising regularly and eating well, not only will you lose weight, but you will gain so much more energy, your skin will look better and everything about you will feel youthful and refreshed.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Athletic Greens review and I hope it serves your health well in the near future.

It was spring and I was 12 years old. I hopped off the school bus like all my other classmates to rush home. But that’s where the similarities ended.

They went straight to the TV set or grabbed their bicycles to enjoy the sunny day. I had other plans.  I went straight inside, changed into my black sweat pants, put on my little ankle weights and headed down into the basement.

I had a jump rope, a weight set and a 2 hour workout planned for that day. Monday through Saturday—there was only one thing on my mind: Exercising and eating healthy.

I’ve Been Obsessed With Health and Fitness For a Long Time …

After the 2 hour workouts I went upstairs and took my multi-vitamins, maybe some protein if we could afford it and then I got on the super-slow dial up internet connection we had to spend the rest of the night feeding my obsession.

I’d surf for hours and type all kinds of health related topics into search engines trying to find out what the best athletes and most successful health authors had to say.

I took nutrition pretty seriously and followed all the advice of the day. How my diet has changed since then (now that information has become more accurate and plentiful) is a story for another day.

But I always thought I was doing the right thing by taking my multi-vitamins every day.

Have You Ever Heard Of A “Bedpan” Bullet?

Flash forward to a few years ago and I was shocked to discover those multi-vitamins I had been taking all those years probably didn’t help that much.

I discovered Nurses in hospitals who cleaned out patient’s  bedpans nicknamed these undigested multi-vitamins “bedpan bullets”.

Workers at sewer treatment plants joke about undigested multivitamin supplements they see in their screens, calling them the “most expensive sewage in the world”.

The Problem Is How These Supplements Are Made.

First, most supplement companies use pure synthetic ingredients. That means instead of getting vitamins from fruit or veggies in its natural form (with all the naturally occurring factors and enzymes the way your body was designed to get it) they just synthesize it in a lab.

That’s a big problem because natural vitamins you get from foods easily absorbed and utilized by your body… but by taking these synthetic vitamins… You’re Ingesting Toxic Substances!

The most advanced research has shown your body treats synthetic substances such as these vitamins the same way it treats a virus. It puts processes into action to rid itself of this unhealthy foreign invader threatening its survival.

Tablets Are A Big Problem Too

Even if the supplement company uses 100% natural vitamins and minerals the heat and treating process  and extremely high levels of pressure required to compress the raw materials into tablets, completely denatures almost everything in the formula.

In most cases the “super hard core animal mega paks” so many people take are synthetic vitamins, heated to extremely high temperatures, subjected to intense levels of pressure and compressed into tablets so dense and hard—your body will never digest them.

And that’s why you see multivitamins show up as “bedpan bullets” and floating around sewage plants, not to mention the fluorescent urine that accompanies these products.

But You Desperately NEED A Good Multi-Vitamin …

We all do. It’s simply impossible to get all the nutrients, micronutrients and other co-factors you need from your food. Here’s why:

Research shows in almost every country on the planet, the soil has been seriously depleted of vital minerals and enzymes from decades of improper “big corporation” farming techniques and brazen use of harmful, depleting, cancer-causing chemicals and pesticides.

The Bottom Line Is: You’d have to eat THREE TIMES the amount of fruits and veggies today to equal the health benefits of eating them just 10 years ago.

So What’s The Solution?

I struggled with a proper multi-vitamin supplement for a long time. I bought lots of other supplements to “fill in the gaps”. Green drinks. Fiber. Pre and pro-biotics and much, MUCH more.

Then I met “The Kiwi”, Chris Ashenden, who introduced me to his breakthrough nutritional supplement “Athletic Greens®” … and … once I started taking it, I never looked back.

The Top 7 Reasons I Switched To Athletic Greens®

1.      Whole Natural Food Derived

Every single one of the ingredients in Athletic Greens® is sourced from 100% nutrient-dense natural foods grown in the most fertile soil in the world … and … it’s ground into a powder for maximum absorption (more on that next).

The major benefit? You get the nutrients your body craves and they’re completely bioavailable and absorbed much, much faster.

Because it’s derived from 100% natural, whole food sources, after you open your container—you should keep it in the refrigerator because it’s REAL food and should be treated as such.

2.      Powder Form

Athletic Greens®  is a powder that you mix in your favorite beverage and drink down. There’s two big advantages to this: one, you get the nutrients into your system as quickly as possible and two, you can make some REALLY delicious recipes (I’ll share a few of my own in a moment).

3.      Replaces Multi-Vitamin

As I said before, Athletic Greens® replaces ALL the vitamins and minerals in ANY multi-vitamin … and … there is probably a lot more that you don’t get in “normal” formulas. Plus, because it’s 100% natural whole foods sourced, your body actually absorbs ALL of it.

In fact, if you’ve ever taken a multi-vitamin before in high doses, you’ve probably noticed you had “radioactive urine”— your urine looks really bright—because the vitamins are passing through your system.

With Athletic Greens®, you won’t see that … because … it’s all being absorbed by your body.

4.      Replaces Green Drinks

I used to take a “Green drink” to boost my alkalinity and get other important micronutrients. Not anymore. Athletic Greens® completely replaces those drinks with its Alkaline, RAW, and extremely dense green formula of Superfoods.

ONE serving of Athletic Greens® contains the anti-oxidant equivalent of 10-12 servings of fruits and vegetables with an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) off the charts at 5000!

5.      Replaces Other Supplements (zinc, mag, etc)

Plus, the complete vitamin and mineral profile in Athletic Greens® has all the good stuff most supplements leave out. The high levels of absorbable zinc replace the need for athletes to supplement with Zinc. The Magnesium is dosed perfectly for active individuals and the essential mineral selenium is in there too (which you won’t even find in most brands of multi-vitamins!) Also replaces anti-oxidant or longevity formulas, pre or pro biotic formulas, immune boosting formulas, “detox” formulas, to name a few.

6.      Tastes Amazing!

But probably the best news for everyone is that Athletic Greens® is literally the BEST tasting “health drink” I’ve ever consumed. If you’ve ever had to force yourself to “choke down” a health drink (especially the grass-tasting green drinks)—then you will LOVE the sweet, refreshing taste of Athletic Greens®!

7.      A Company With Integrity

While I know Chris Ashenden personally … I’m not the only one that raves about Athletic Greens® and his amazing company. Multiple time NY Times best-selling author Tim Ferriss raves about it too, he calls it:

My favorite greens supplement. This is my all-in-one greens insurance policy. It contains 76 ingredients, including inulin for bacterial balance [in the digestive track]”

What’s more: I know, for a fact, half a dozen ways they could cut corners during their production, manufacturing process, and more—changes that would increase their bottom line profits by 100% or more … but … they simply will not do it.

They care intensely about the quality of not only their products … but also … taking care of their customers and rewarding them for their loyalty.

In fact, I love Athletic Greens® so much …

I Don’t Just Pay For My Monthly Supply,
I Pay For My Mom … AND … My Dad’s Too!

I just couldn’t get them to try it fast enough … so … I signed them up for a monthly supply and happily pay that money each and every month because I know … beyond a shadow of a doubt … that it’s one of the best things they could do for their health.

Let’s face it: aging is a disease but it can be fought and proper nutrition is a key component. The benefits are FELT too …

My mom thinks it tastes great. And my dad (who used to pound Metamucil every night) says he no longer needs fiber and it keeps him regular, along with giving him a TON of energy.

In my mind: Athletic Greens® is so important, I would never let them stop taking it. They don’t mind either because it’s so delicious …

The Tastiest Health Drink You’ll Ever Consume …

Now, Athletic Greens® mixes perfectly in water with just a spoon and tastes great that way. But here’s a simple recipe that I’ve been making lately – I use it as a post-workout, recovery drink but you can take it any time of the day you want a boost of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and protein:

Ultimate Post-Recovery Drink Recipe

  • 1 Cup Raw Milk from Grass Fed Cows
  • 2 Heaping Tablespoons of Athletic Greens®
  • 1/3 cup of Coconut Milk
  • 1 scoop of protein powder (plain) from grass fed cows.
  • Small amount of ice is optional. Blend for a few seconds.

The combination of flavors is AMAZING in my opinion and it’s a nutritional powerhouse:

452 total calories
24 grams of healthy fat
25 grams of healthy carbs
33.5 grams of protein.

… and … all 100% natural and chock-full of ALL the vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, alkaline-boosting goodness that you need.

It’s EASY To Get Athletic Greens®

Now, you can’t find a high-quality supplement like Athletic Greens® at any retail store. That’s because they’d have to cut the necessary corners in order to produce the product at mass quantities those types of stores need.

But it’s simple and incredible easy to get it from the source. Just go to AthleticGreens.com and sign up right away to get it shipped to your house each and every month … so that … you never run out of your personal supply of this nutritional powerhouse.

And of course, because they are a company with integrity there is No Risk to you in trying it. Athletic Greens® stands behind their “60 Day Empty Bottle No Questions Asked Guarantee” – if Athletic Greens® isn’t the best supplement you’ve ever tried, simply return the bottle (even if empty) for a complete, no questions asked, 100% refund of your purchase price.

It will change your life. My hopes are that you stop taking multi-vitamins for your health too … and … get on Athletic Greens® instead!

Taking certain supplements for runners can help to limit muscle loss and other potential negative effects that can occur if you lack certain nutrients in your body due to running. These supplements may also help make you a better runner. While it is best to get most of your nutrients through food, not everyone consumes diets that contain enough of all of the nutrients they need, so supplements for runners are a good option for those who find they may be lacking in certain nutrients.

Alkaline Foods

When you spend a lot of time running, you increase the amount of muscle mass you lose. Consuming alkaline foods or supplements made from these foods can help increase your body’s nitrogen levels and limit the amount of muscle you lose after running. Alkaline foods include spinach, lettuce, celery, carrots, raisins and bananas. Spaghetti, cheese, meat, brown rice and whole grain bread are all acidic foods, so if you consume these foods be sure to consume some alkaline foods to help balance out your nitrogen levels and counteract some of the acidity from these acidic foods.

Calcium

Running is a high intensity exercise that can cause a lot of wear and tear on your body. Taking calcium supplements can help to increase your bone density and the strength of your bones, thus limiting your risk for injuries, including stress fractures. Consuming calcium-rich foods, including dairy products, fortified orange juice and dark green, leafy vegetables can help you increase your calcium intake, as can taking calcium supplements along with vitamin D and vitamin K. Look for supplements for runners that contain doses of 500 mg of calcium or less per dose to help increase the amount of calcium you absorb, since your body can only absorb this much calcium at a time.

Magnesium

Magnesium supplements can improve your endurance if you haven’t been consuming enough magnesium, or if you sweat a lot when you are running and lose magnesium in this manner. This is because magnesium is involved in energy metabolism and muscle contractions. Foods containing magnesium include dark green, leafy vegetables, whole grains, molasses and nuts. Make sure you don’t get too much magnesium through supplements, however, as this could interfere with calcium absorption or cause diarrhea.

Supplements For Runners

Chromium

Runners may need extra chromium, as endurance exercise may cause your body to lose chromium more quickly, and chromium is used by your body to turn carbohydrates into energy. Since runners often consume diets high in carbohydrates, chromium is an especially important supplement for runners. Although research results are mixed, chromium may also help you build more muscle mass while losing fat. Nuts, raw oysters, cocoa, brewer’s yeast, white mushrooms, roasted peanuts, wine, meat, seedless raisins, corn flakes and wheat germ are good food sources. Keep your supplemental chromium intake low, as it can interfere with zinc absorption if you get too much chromium from supplements.

Beta-Carotene

Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A, as well as an antioxidant. Foods that are high in beta-carotene include carrots; dark green, leafy vegetables; winter squash; egg yolk; butter; milk; liver; tomatoes; broccoli; cantaloupe; peaches; grains; sweet potatoes and other orange-colored fruits and vegetables. Preliminary research indicates that beta-carotene may help to improve your running performance, perhaps even shaving seconds off your racing times.

If you don’t want to take a lot of different supplements, you can choose one of the supplements for runners that contains all of these nutrients. One example is the Athletic Greens supplement, which contains all five of the nutrients listed above, as well as a number of other highly beneficial nutrients. It is also one of the few supplements for runners made from all natural, whole food ingredients. You can find out more about it by reading my full unbiased Athletic Greens review.  I have been taking this supplement for over the past 6 months and I wouldn’t consider taking anything else.  Taking supplements for runners can help make sure you have all the nutrients you need for good health and good performance at your next race.

Chlorella Benefits – What Is It and How Can It Benefit You?

Introduction Into Chlorella Benefits

Due to our busy lifestyle, we often forget to eat healthy foods and eat fast foods instead. As a result, our body does not get the proper nutrients. In order to avoid nutritional deficiency, we can take supplements to complement our diet, such as Athletic Greens. This natural whole food not only covers one’s daily nutritional needs, but it also contains Chlorella, to boost the body’s alkalinity, and improve digestive health.

What is Chlorella?

Chlorella is a species of single-cell, green, fresh water algae. This organism has chlorophyll, for photosynthesis, a process that converts light into chemical energy. As a supplement, the Chlorella benefits are plentiful.

Benefits of having Chlorella in your daily diet

1. Chlorella benefits to aid detoxification

Chlorella is used to detoxify our body. We are exposed to heavy metals and chemicals, and we eat foods that are sprayed with pesticides and herbicides. Chlorella is known to be able to perform a cleansing process, using its fibrous material to bind and remove all these toxic substances from the body.

2. Chlorella benefits to boost the immune system

Chlorella is also known to support the immune system. T-cell activity increases when taken daily, which is important for immunity, resulting in an increase of macrophages or white blood cells. Chlorella will strengthen the immune system’s ability to protect the body from viruses and bacteria.

Athletic Greens

3. Chlorella benefits the digestive system

We often experience symptoms of indigestion when under stress, experience anxiety, or when food remains for too long in the stomach. Taking Chlorella helps the food move into the small intestine faster and improves bowel movement. The fibrous cell of the Chlorella helps to improve the health of the digestive tract.

4. Chlorella benefits to protect the liver

According to studies, Chlorella helps to detoxify the liver from alcohol absorption and other toxic chemicals to keep healthy. Chlorella also assists the liver to remove bacteria, fungi and poisons from entering the bloodstream.

5. Chlorella benefits to help balance the body’s pH

Our body has a normal pH of 7.2 to 7.4, but the nutritional deficiency caused from eating fast and processed foods, contributes to lowering the pH level of the body. The alkalinity in Chlorella helps to balance the body’s pH.

Why take Chlorella in powder form?

Taking powdered Chlorella is important because the body can absorb all the nutrients more readily as compared to a capsule or tablet form. The enzymes and pro-biotics in the powder are maximized due to the manufacturing process that uses a lower temperature than does a process making tablets and capsules. Additionally, taking this supplement in a powder form is convenient as it can be mixed with juice.

Conclusion

Chlorella’s benefits make Athletic Greens a complete food supplement to support nutritional health. The natural ingredients in this powder help to boost energy and help the body to stay healthy. It is an important supplement to include in one’s diet in order to counter the negative health effects a modern and industrialized society brings. So be sure to include this amazing supplement in your daily diet and realize all the Chlorella benefits.

Nutritional Wheatgrass Benefits

So what are all the wheatgrass benefits and how will it benefit you? If you’ve read my Athletic Greens review above, you will know that this is one of many key ingredients in this fantastic product. The nutritional value in wheatgrass actually comes from the juice, not the grass itself.

Some History On Wheatgrass & Wheatgrass Benefits

Charles F. Schnabel first started conducting experiments back in 1930. He used fresh cut grass in a scientific attempt to save dying hens. To his surprise, not only did they recover, but they were producing eggs at a much higher rate.

Enthralled by his discovery, he started drying and powdering the grass for his family and neighbors as a dietary supplement. The next year, he reproduced the same experiment and came up with the same results.

Two large corporations, Quaker Oats and American Dairies Inc., invested millions in research and development. By 1940, containers of the powdered grass hit the shelves in major drug stores all across the United States and Canada.

So What’s In Wheatgrass?

If you were to take just 1 oz (28.35g) of this powerful super food, this is what you would get:

Protein – 860 mg
Beta-Carotene – 120 IU (International Unit)
Vitamin E – 880 mcg (Microgram)
Vitamin C – 1 mg
Vitamin B12 – .30 mcg
Phosphorus – 21 mg
Magnesium – 8 mg
Calcium – 7.2 mg
Iron – .66 mg
Potassium – 42 mg

Schnabel made a claim in the 1940’s that for every 350 pounds of garden vegetables, you would only need 15 pounds of wheatgrass. Now that’s some powerful stuff.

What Are Some Of The Wheatgrass Benefits and Health Claims?

It is made up of approximately 70% chlorophyll and is very alkaline thereby being classified as one of many super foods.  There is some research out there that states diets high in chlorophyll, which is present in green leafy vegetables, can help lower the rates of colon cancer.  This is just one of the many wheatgrass benefits, as you will see below.

Furthermore, according to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, they completed a small pilot study of patients suffering from ulcerative colitis. When on wheatgrass therapy it reduced rectal bleeding and overall disease activity.

Though it has been argued, wheatgrass helps blood flow, general detoxification and digestion of the body.  Another pilot study of children with thalassemia were given 100ml of wheatgrass juice daily. Surprisingly, half showed a reduction in the need of blood transfusions and with no adverse reactions.
This last one was very exciting to read regarding women with breast cancer. Patients who drank wheatgrass juice daily showed a decrease in bone marrow and blood building medications during their chemotherapy.

So What Does All This Mean?

Wheatgrass should be a part of your daily nutrition. Whether you decide to spend $1.50 for that ounce of wheatgrass or enjoy it in a powder form of Athletic Greens, just be sure you are consuming tons of green vegetables and enjoy all the wheatgrass benefits.

Top 10 Nutrition Tips

In today’s society, we are bombarded with so many health claims, dietary supplements, what to eat – what not to eat, etc.  And in our very fast paced lives, we tend to lose focus on what helps keep us going… nutrition.

I have compiled my top ten nutrition tips that help keep my body functioning at its optimum levels.

1.    Instead of restricting your diet by not eating important foods, focus on your eating habits.  You need to remember that what you consume will always have a deep impact on the way you perform, look and feel.

2.    I like to decide what my “menu” is going to be for the week and go to the grocery store and pile up on the fruits, vegetables and nourishing foods.  I know it can be hard not to stop by the cookie isle, but trust me, you will feel so much better when you eat well and avoid the junk food.

3.    You should focus on eating the foods that are nourishing to your body and not load up on foods that are high in sugar.  Avoid these whenever possible and consume nourishing foods to keep your body functioning at optimal levels.

4.    Do your best to avoid consuming casual calories.  These calories have no nutritional value and include: candy, soda, triple caramel fudge latte with a dollop of whipped cream.  You get my point.  This is the easiest way (besides not exercising) to become overweight.

5.    I know that it’s a misconception, but carbohydrates don’t make you fat. Neither does protein. And fat does not make you fat.  What does are the excess calories that we take in that we can’t burn off… this will make you fat.  Exercise frequently and keep your calorie count in check.  Remember, our bodies need protein, carbohydrates and fat in our diets, just not in excess.

6.    Most people are accustomed to eating 3-meals a day.  What you need to recognize is that you should be eating smaller portions, more frequently throughout the day.  Doing so will not only keep your blood-sugar balanced, but it will help keep your energy levels up, metabolism up and consequently, burn calories and fat.

7.    If you must eat at a fast food restaurant, order all your sauces, dressings and dips on the side.  This way you can monitor the amount you take in.  You also should try and order foods that contain some carbs, protein and fat.

8.    Ahhh, the deep fried foods.  I love them and I know you do to.  But STOP loading up on them so frequently.  They are loaded in trans fatty acids and are toxic to us.  Yes, that includes french fries.

9.    Breads, potatoes and pastas are loaded in carbs.  Too much is not good and convert to sugars.  Try and replace some of those carbs with fruits and vegetables.  Not only do they boost you body’s immune system, but they are also know to slow the aging process.  You want to consume dark leafy vegetables like broccoli uncooked spinach, salads and wheatgrass, just to name a few.  Also, there are phenomenal supplements out there that incorporate all the necessary green foods your body needs.  One such product that I use every day is Athletic Greens.  Be sure to read my review if you haven’t already.

10. Lastly, always read the food labels.  Manufacturers do not care if you are healthy or not.  Fat free products are not always fat free.  And stay away from hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, they help contribute to heart disease.

Always remember that it takes commitment over the course of a couple of weeks to make something a habit.  And by doing so, you help guarantee your body is healthy with all the nutrition it needs to function optimally. I hope these nutrition tips have helped you in striving towards a much healthier lifestyle.

Alkaline Foods – The Importance Of Maintaining Your pH Levels

One of the reasons I decided to write an Athletic Greens review was not only because of all the organic and nutritious ingredients, but because of the amount of alkaline foods in contains.  So what are alkaline foods and how can it benefit you?  First, we need to understand the differences between acids and alkaline.  To be healthy, our bodies need both.  Not only that, but when present in equal quantities, our acid-alkaline balance is achieved.

What Is An Acid?

There are two different types of acids: Weak & Strong.

Strong acids primarily come from animal proteins and consist of uric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids.  To eliminate these types of acids from your body, it requires significant neutralization performed by the liver and kidneys.  Your kidneys can only eliminate a fixed amount of strong acids from your body on a daily basis.  Whatever the kidneys can’t remove get stored in your tissues and joints.

This stored uric acid in the tissues and joints convert to uric acid crystals.  This is also known as gout.  I have suffered gout in the past and know exactly how painful this can be.  My bouts with gout, aka: “rich man’s disease” cause such pain that it feels like I have a broken toe.  Ouch!  However, I have not had gout in about a year and is one of the many reasons why I drink Athletic Greens (or eating lots of green vegetables) which keeps my pH in balance.  I’ll explain what pH is later.

Here’s a list of Strong Acids:

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Seafood
  • Cheeses
  • Eggs
  • Whole grains and refined grains
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Wine

Weak acids on the other hand primarily come from plant proteins and are easily eliminated by the lungs.  Because of this, there is not limit as to how much weak acids can be eliminated from your body by the kidneys and lungs.  Exercising frequently is an exceptional way to keep the weak acids in check since sweat also is a source of elimination.

What Is an Alkaline and what are some Alkaline foods

In its simplest form, alkaline foods have no corrosive properties like acids do. They help neutralize the acids in our body.  Alkaline foods have little to no acidic taste.  If you ever have pains from an acid stomach, one of the best remedies is to drink potato juice or milk.  These are high alkaline foods.  Here’s a list of other alkaline foods:

  • Potatoes
  • Green vegetables, raw or cooked
  • Colored vegetable: carrots, beets
  • Corn
  • Milk
  • Banana’s
  • Almonds, Brazil nuts
  • Alkaline mineral waters
  • Almond milk
  • Avocado

So How Is Acidity Measured?

Acidity is measured using a pH scale ranging from 0 to 14, 7 being neutral pH.  The body functions its best at 7.39.  Meaning, the body is slightly alkaline.  The acidity range is 6 to 0, where 0 indicates absolute acidity.  Conversely, 8 to 14 indicates total alkalinity.

Normal pH is in a range between 7.36 and 7.42.  A reading above or below these numbers indicates acidosis (from 7.36 to 7) or alkalosis (7.42 to 7.8).  If you exceed these limits, the body begins to shut down and can no longer function.  Death is the ending result.

Eat More Alkaline Foods To Maintain a More Alkaline Body

Well, eat more alkalizing foods.  Eat a ton of green vegetables.  The darker the green the better.  One very powerful green food is wheatgrass.  There are many wheatgrass benefits, so be sure to read my article I wrote when you have the chance.  You also want to make sure you include protein as well.  Never focus your eating habits on just alkaline foods for more than a couple weeks.  Remember, if your body is too alkaline, it ceases to function.

Lastly, we all get so busy in our daily lives that we forget to take care of our bodies.  You need to not only feed it every day, but we need to feed it the proper foods.  This is why I always start my morning off with Athletic Greens…the alkaline foods my body needs!
